Waterfront Bank Stabilization

Posted on April 9, 2009
Kitsap and Jefferson counties include a significant amount of coastline. Living on that coastline is a double-edged sword. It is beautiful and exhilarating, but it brings with it the task of minimizing the deterioration of the shoreline over time. The State of Washington has a series of three publications, which have also been made available online, that help waterfront homeowners make their banks more stable.

The first of them, "Slope Stabilization and Erosion Control Using Vegetation: A Manual of Practice for Coastal Property Owners," discusses planting vegetation to stabilize banks. It describes planting techniques and ranks specific plants for their usefulness in this regard.

The second, "Vegetation Management: A Guide for Puget Sound Bluff Property Owners," covers management of existing vegetation to maximize both views and bank stability.

The third, "Surface Water and Groundwater on Coastal Bluffs," provides information about water management on coastal slopes, including general criteria for evaluating site drainage and potential drainage control techniques.

These three sites could help waterfront owners (and future waterfront owners) improve their peace of mind and possibly prevent the loss of a piece of their land.

To reach the publications click on the link below. They are mid-way down the list of links.
